FOR THE LOVE OF A PRINCESS
BRAVEHEART
This wonderful piece of music, composed by James Horner, is the love theme that can be heard throughout the movie. It's a passionate and poignant melody in Am, which starts with the chord progression VI - VII and then returns to the tonic i: it's played at first by a solo Alto Flute, then it is carried out by the strings. Then comes the second part of the piece, where a different theme is played by a solo oboe accompanied by a solo violin in the background, always in Am. This Theme B is then transposed in Gm and played again by the oboe, the violins and the violas with a mellow harp in the background: the strings play crescendo until, after another key signature switch (back to Am), the Theme A is brought back. This time the first violins play an octave above the second violins and violas; the brass are also introduced: a french horn, playing 1/4 notes, and the trombones and tubas playing the root notes in different octaves. This piece fully highlights James Horner's style: the theme is delicate but at the same time passionate and poignant, making it very impactful.
